Overexertion causes 35% of work-related injuries and is the number one reason for lost work days. Regular exercise, stretching and strength training can prevent injury.
Overexertion likely to occur in four ways:
- High force demands; lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying or using tools.
- Awkward or stationary posture; bending, twisting, reaching and kneeling.
- Repetitive movements; doing the same motion repeatedly.
- All other hazards: stress; cold temperatures, hope environments, hand/arm or whole body vibration such as hammering with hand.
Overexertion can be prevented:
- Plan your lift before you begin, keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
- Limit the amount of time you spend doing the same motion over and over.
- Take frequent breaks from any sustained position every 30-40 minutes.
- If you work at a desk, move frequently.
