National Pharmacy Week

National Pharmacy Week is October 15–21 to recognize and salute our cadre of hardworking, committed, and dedicated pharmacists and acknowledge their invaluable contributions to the communities we serve.

October 17 is Pharmacy Technician Day and we appreciate and value the integral role our pharmacy technicians play in supporting the delivery of excellent patient care.

Our pharmacists and technicians are often hard at work in tandem with providers to ensure patients are provided with the medication they need to mitigate health concerns until improved health and/or full recovery is achieved.

Alice Ohanele and Nelda Celestin shared sentiments about their experiences as pharmacists at YKHC:

“Over the past year at YKHC, my experience as a pharmacist has been incredibly rewarding. I have had the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who prioritize patient well-being. The collaborative environment at YKHC has allowed me to continually expand my knowledge and skills in the field of pharmacy. Interacting with patients and providing them with personalized medication counseling has been a fulfilling aspect of my role. I am proud to contribute to the high standard of care at YKHC and look forward to many more years of positively impacting the health of our community.” Alice Ohanele

“Working as a pharmacist at YKHC has given me the privilege to interact with members of the community and learn about the Yup’ik culture. Learning about the Yup’ik culture helps me to tailor medication counseling and lifestyle modifications with considerations and respect for cultural ways. This approach ultimately makes me a better pharmacist and facilitates healthier relationships and connections with those I serve.” Nelda Celestin

We also reflect on thoughts shared by pharmacists Modinat Ope and Katarzyna Wielgosz in last year’s pharmacist recognition month:

My work has positively impacted me both personally and professionally. Working with different healthcare professionals/practitioners and serving the community has heightened my awareness of the importance of healthy living for me and everyone within my circle of influence.

It has taught me to be more patient, sympathetic and empathetic. I still have a lot of room to grow to fortify my skills set. I am appreciative of the chance to meet and work with other smart, courageous and knowledgeable healthcare providers who have been great coaches and mentors to me.” Modinat Ope

“My primary role is to provide evidence-based pharmacological treatment focused on geriatrics and pediatrics. Caring for the elders of the communities in our region is not just about providing healthcare to often neglected patients, but also providing support to their families. In a society that relies heavily on the wisdom of elders to educate and shape the foundation of youth, I am grateful to serve and learn from these elders. As a lifelong learner, exploring ways to enhance my knowledge and skills to support my patients is ongoing.

Living and working in Bethel for over three years has provided immense opportunities to get to know the Native Alaskan culture, make friends and call this region my home. My work has been rewarding in many ways as I grow to live, learn and love the unique cultures and natural beauty of this region.” Katarzyna Wielgosz

Be sure to thank a pharmacist and a pharmacist technician the next time you visit our pharmacy for the pivotal role they play in the delivery of healthcare in our service area.

Quyana to all the dedicated employees in our pharmacy department!
