This week’s safety message is a continuation of YKHC’s EOC Tour overview, this week will cover questions related to infection prevention and observation:
- Staff Attire: Clean and neat. No open-toed shoes
- Staff personal items are not to be stored in patient care areas or exam rooms
- No food or drinks in patient care areas and/or rooms. Drinks that are in the work areas are to be covered
- Hand Hygiene (CDC protocol): soap and water for 20 seconds
- PPE: Appropriate gloves/gowns/mask available
- PPE changed between patients; proper technique on and off for isolation
- Sharp containers: Available & secured to the wall and not full to top
- Receptacles: Available and red biohazard bags used and emptied regularly; not with trash
- All areas are clean, uncluttered; floors clean without trash
- Equipment and wheel chairs are clean, no holes/tears and none in egress area
- Horizontal surfaces & ventilation grills are clean & free of dust
- All cabinets/drawers/containers are closed
- Stock rotation; soonest to expire in front and no items under sink
- Patient exam room are cleaned
- Sterile area: packages intact, not expired; no dust, debris or soiled items
- Clean & dirty supplies are in separate utility room
- Clean linen are covered and cart with solid bottom shelf
- Soiled linen are stored in covered linen hamper and not overflowing
- What should you do for an exposure or needle stick?
Contact Supervisor and Employee Health Nurse. Submit in Quantros and call MedCor - Staff can verbalize negative or positive pressure monitoring for rooms. Smoke or tissue test.
