Safety Session of the Week: Fatigue

Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each day to reach peak performance, but nearly one-third report averaging less than six hours. The effects of fatigue are far-reaching and can have an adverse impact in all areas of our lives.

Here are the potential dangers you may face if you neglect getting adequate amounts of sleep:

  • Safety performance decreases as employees become tired
  •   Chronic sleep-deprivation causes depression, obesity, cardiovascular disease and other illnesses
  • Drowsy driving, you are three times more likely to be in a car crash if you are fatigued
  •  Don’t drive if you’ve been awake for 24 hours or more
  • Don’t be an impatient driver; slow down
  • Stay in your lane and beware of drivers who dart from lane to lane
  •  Even though the route may be familiar, don’t go on autopilot; stay alert
  • Don’t touch your phone, eat, drink or do other things that are distracting
