Ice safety tips

As winter approaches and temperatures drop, the lakes and rivers will begin to freeze. Below are some Ice Safety Tips to share:

  • Ice seldom forms at a uniform rate. It is important to check ice thickness. Underwater currents can wear thin spots on the ice.
  • Be extra cautious when temperatures are fluctuating. When temperatures vary widely, it can cause ice to thaw during the day and refreeze at night, resulting in weak, “spongy” or honeycombed ice that is unsafe.
  • A walking stick or a ski pole is a useful tool to learn of vulnerable spots.
  • Find a good local source that is knowledgeable about ice conditions.
  • Tell a responsible adult where you are going and what time you expect to get back. Relaying your plan can help save your life if something does happen.
  • Wear a life jacket and bright colored clothing. Reflective material can be seen from 500 feet. Ice cleats will help from slipping and falling.
