Tips for Protecting Yourself from Seasonal Allergies

Hello again!

Summer is here and the great outdoors offers tons of exciting opportunities for exercise and physical activity. From daily jogs, berry picking to volleyball, there are several ways to stay active during this season. However, all these fantastic opportunities can often times be overshadowed by allergies. Here are a couple of tips to best protect yourself while enjoying the sunshine!

  • Remember: Begin your workout well hydrated and with a solid warm up.
  • Identify what you are allergic too. This is important as some allergens are more present in the air during different times of the day. By knowing which allergens trigger your symptoms, you can plan your workouts accordingly. While this won’t completely reduce your exposer, it could greatly limit the amount of allergens you come in contact with.
  • Check Bethel’s daily pollen count. There are a couple of handy websites that break down the day’s allergen levels based on the top producers of pollen in the local area. Here is one I have found quiet useful of the last couple of weeks:
  • Monitor how intense your workouts are.Consider bumping down your long bike rides and trail runs if you find that if longer and more intense workouts seem to trigger your symptoms. The American College of Sports Medicine recommendations call for 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week. While this is the bare minimum of work, this minor tweak could help you stay active during the summer months!
    • Examples of Moderate Exercise
      • Walking
      • Cycling
      • Jogging
      • Some forms of Yoga
