Safety Message: Five safety tips for healthcare workers

1.        Keep yourself safe from blood-borne pathogens. Take necessary safeguards like wearing personal protecting equipment (PPE) to avoid contact with infections. Proper use of gowns, gloves, basic safety goggles and face shields keep body fluids away from contact with skin.

2.       Avoid needle injuries. Follow the proper disposal system for sharps and infectious waste products. Employees must be extra cautious when handling needles, as accidental pricks with dirty needles raise the risk of becoming infected with different diseases.

3.        Use proper devices to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Use assistive devices such as slide bed linens, slings, and digital hoists whenever you can. Use the right body techniques for reducing the chance of accidents or injury to yourself and your patients.

4.        Become familiar with procedures on employee safety against chemical hazards. Get trained and be familiar with handling unsafe substances safely.

5.        Review fire safety. Know the fire response plan: know R.A.C.E and P.A.S.S (on the back of your employee ID) as well as your exit routes.
