This week’s safety message covers what do to in the instance of a Code Gray and a Code Silver; a civil disturbance without a weapon, and a civil disturbance with a weapon.
Code Gray: Civil Disturbance with no Weapon
- Alert other staff by voice or phone.
- Staff who can safely leave their post will response to the announced location to display “show of force”.
- The nurse manager (or designee) is in charge of a “Code Gray” incident in patient care areas.
- In non-patient care areas, the Lead Supervisor at the Code Gray location will take charge of the situation or may delegate leadership to a more qualified employee upon his/her arrival.
- Late responders to a “Code Gray” incident shall leave the scene if it appears under control and eight or more responders are present.
- Security will respond and they shall remain at site until situation under control. If the situation escalates, call the police.
Code Silver: Civil disturbance with weapon
- Contact police and announced overhead.
- Take cover, stay in a locked room until “all clear” is made overhead.
