Safety Message: Grilling safety

As temperatures rise, many of us are choosing to take our cooking outdoors. This week’s safety message provides tips you can use to ensure you are grilling safely. Grilling food is so popular that more than three-quarters of U.S. adults have used a grill — yet, grilling sparks more than 10,000 home fires on average each year. To avoid this, here are some grilling safety tips:

1.      Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use. Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

2.      Never grill indoors — not in the house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.

3.      Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.

4.      Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.

5.      Use long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill. These keep the chef safe from burning.
