Tobacco-Free Campus Policy reminder

The recent snow melt reveals various locations where people are using tobacco and discarding cigarette butts on YKHC campuses.  Security has noticed hundreds of cigarette butts throughout YKHC, on sidewalks, in the parking lots and in the grass.  Discarded cigarette butts that are still lit can cause brush fires and are a major safety concern, especially with the transition into the summer season.  In addition to the safety concern, it’s important to note the tobacco free campus policy was passed to protect the public from second hand smoke exposure, all of which align with YKHC’s mission to improve the health of the individuals and communities we serve.

Frequently Asked Questions on the Tobacco Free Campus Policy:

Why are we a Tobacco-Free Campus?

YKHC has upheld a tobacco-free facility policy for several years. We believe our mission calls us to improve the health of the individuals and communities we serve. We believe we have a responsibility to take a leadership role on this major health issue and promote a healthier environment by becoming a fully tobacco-free campus.

Why can’t we move smoke shacks to a different location or just further away?

Smoking and secondhand smoke are known health hazards. We do not want our patients, visitors or employees to be exposed to secondhand smoke while in our care or on our property.

How do I approach an individual who I see using tobacco on campus?

Please remember to always be respectful and courteous when approaching individuals found using tobacco on the YKHC campus. We simply ask that you remind individuals of the policy and, if the individual is interested, you can share with them resources available to help quit tobacco.

What if someone I approach about tobacco use gets angry?

All staff members are expected to remain respectful and courteous when approaching someone using tobacco products on YKHC property. If the tobacco user becomes agitated or hostile, please do not escalate the situation. Simply walk away and notify your supervisor or security of the incident

I’m a tobacco user. What if I’m not ready to stop using tobacco?

The tobacco-free campus policy does not require individuals to quit tobacco and or vaping, the use of them just needs to be off YKHC property.

What if I see someone going into an unsafe area to use tobacco?

Security routinely monitors the boundaries of the property to ensure people are not lingering in high-risk areas to use tobacco. However, it is the responsibility of all staff to notify individuals they observe using tobacco on the policy.

What is third-hand smoke and why is it also prohibited?

Third-hand smoke is residual nicotine and other chemicals left on a variety of surfaces, including hair, clothing, and hands. This residue reacts to common indoor pollutants to create a toxic mix. Second and third-hand smoke present serious health risks. If you are a tobacco user, and are concerned you may be impacted by this part of the policy, you may want to consider choosing an off-site location to smoke—where you can access a change of clothes or use a smoking jacket that you dedicate for this purpose to limit the exposure of third-hand smoke to your clothing. Also, always wash your hands after using tobacco.
