Safety Message: Heart health month

February is American Heart Month and a part of being safe is taking taking care of your body. Follow these tips and the links to find resources that will help you take care of your self.

1.      Stop smoking – visit YKHC’s Tobacco Prevention & Cessation program for more information and resources.

2.      Get active – do 30 minutes of activity each day

3.      Manage your weight – stick to a healthy, balanced diet. Visit YKHC’s healthy recipes page, which includes videos!

4.      Eat more fiber – eat from a variety of sources including whole meal bread, bran oats and wholegrain cereal

5.      Cut down on saturated fat – choose leaner cuts of meats and lower dairy products, like 1% instead of whole milk

6.      Get your 5 a day – 5 portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables a day

7.      Cut down on salt – avoid using salt at the table and try adding less to your cooking

8.      Eat fish

10.  Read the food label – read labels to see how many calories, fat, salt and sugar are in product contains
